The caves have small mine tracks that go from the caves and down to the Color Castle, where they are refined in to Star Sprinkles.
In the episode Peril in the Pits, Murky Dismal steals an unrefined blue color crystal and throws it into quicksand in the Pits to temporarily make it look like water. This trick got Starlite in big trouble, as he walked into it to clean off.
